Finding your first title in an audio collection

A large catalogue can be inviting and a little overwhelming at the same time. The easiest starting point is not necessarily the newest title or the most dramatic cover. It is a recording whose description makes sense to you.

Begin with a theme

Think about what interests you in an audio experience: atmosphere, a distinctive voice, an imaginative scenario, or a quieter pace. Use that preference to narrow the field, then read a few descriptions rather than opening everything at once.

Notice series and sequels

Titles with a number or a repeated phrase may belong together. A sequel can have a different pace or emphasis from the original. Check the notes instead of assuming that two similar covers describe the same recording.

Separate the cover from the content

Cover artwork gives a first impression, but it is only one part of a product. The description should help explain the recording’s theme. When samples are available, they offer another useful piece of context.

Take the pressure off the choice

Your first title does not have to define your taste forever. Exploring a collection can be gradual. Keep track of what you find interesting and return when you feel like discovering something else.
